De Laurentiis: Sarri close to Chelsea appointment

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed that Chelsea are close to finalising a deal that will see Maurizio Sarri replace Antonio Conte as manager.

Sarri has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge but he remains contracted to Napoli, despite the Serie A club bringing in Carlo Ancelotti as his replacement.

De Laurentiis has hinted that a settlement between the 51-year-old and Napoli is close to being finalised, which would pave the way for him to move to the Premier League.

"Sarri is close to being new Chelsea manager. My lawyers are in talks with his lawyers to finalise everything," the Napoli president told reporters on Wednesday.

Conte has 12 months to run on his contract with the Blues and was present for the start of pre-season training at Cobham on Monday. However, it has been reported that he has not spoken to the club about potential transfer targets amid the uncertainty surrounding his position.

Meanwhile, Napoli midfielder Jorginho looks poised to join Sarri at Stamford Bridge.

De Laurentiis has accepted an offer from Manchester City for the 26-year-old but a move to Chelsea could be on the cards as he favours a move to London.

"We said to ourselves if Jorginho has any requests, we'll take them into account,” De Laurentiis explained. “I accepted Manchester City’s offer 15 days ago, but I have to apologise to them.

“I can understand if the player would prefer to live in London rather than in Manchester, and if Chelsea pay him more.

“Jorginho to Chelsea is not tied to Sarri.”
