Saturday is FA Cup day on eir sport and this week we’ve got the 2011 final between Man City and Stoke City. The action starts at 3pm on eir sport 1.
Roberto Mancini’s big spending City outfit were strong favourites heading into the game as they went in search of their first major trophy in 35 years.
Unlikely though it seems now, their silverware drought stretched back all the way to 1976 and their 2-1 League Cup final triumph over Newcastle most notable for striker Dennis Tueart’s spectacular overhead winner.
Fellow Premier League side Stoke, managed by Tony Pulis and counting Republic of Ireland internationals Marc Wilson, Rory Delap and Jonathan Walters among their starting line-up, had thrashed Bolton 5-0 in the semi-final while City had seen off rivals United.
It was Stoke’s first appearance in the final despite reaching the semi-final four times in their history. One of the oldest clubs in England, their only trophy success had come in the League Cup back in 1972.
