Kearney signs for Western Force

Former Leinster and Ireland full-back Rob Kearney has signed a one-year deal with Australian Super Rugby franchise outfit Western Force.

There had been plenty of speculation that Kearney, who won four Champions Cups, one Challenge Cup and six PRO14 titles in 15 years with Leinster, would look to continue his playing career with reports suggesting that the 34-year-old was considering a number of potential offers.

Western Force was among the names mentioned as a possible destination for the 95-times-capped full-back and those rumours have now been confirmed by the Perth-based club.

"I am delighted to be joining the Western Force for their upcoming season and excited to play with such an ambitious club who are looking to improve on this year's campaign," Kearney said in a statement on the Western Force website.

"I look forward to moving to Western Australia to begin building relationships with my new team-mates and coaches alike and to meet the ever-growing Western Force fan base which also includes a strong Irish contingent."

Matt Hodgson, the club's head of rugby, welcomed the news that Kearney had signed a one-year deal.

"Rob is a fantastic signing, but more than that he is a great person who will be able to bring a lot to WA rugby," he said.

"He also brings a winning mentality, having experienced so much success for his country and Leinster. We can't wait for the Sea of Blue and the sizeable Irish community within WA to see him pull on the Force jersey next season."

The only Irish player to win two grand slams, Kearney will move to Perth ahead of pre-season later this year.
