Ryan signs new contract

Ireland and Leinster have been boosted by the news that lock James Ryan has signed a new three-year central contract.

The contract will keep the talismanic second row with the reigning PRO14 champions until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Ryan, who has won two PRO14 titles and a Champions Cup with Leinster, Ryan made his international debut in 2017 at the age of just 20 when he came off the bench in Ireland’s win over the USA in New Jersey and was one of the stars in the win over Wales on Saturday.

He registered his first international try less than 60 seconds later and has since established himself as a key figure for both club and country.

"I am delighted to sign an IRFU contract," he said.

"A lot has been packed into the start of my professional career with both Ireland and Leinster and there has been some great success and a few disappointments, but I am involved in two very exciting squads that want to be challenging for trophies."

IRFU high performance director David Nucifora was delighted to secure the services of a player he sees as a natural leader and a positive influence on the pitch.

"James is still a young man but he has delivered consistent high level performances for both Ireland and Leinster,” he said.

"He is growing into a leadership role with the national team and has a big future for both Ireland and Leinster."
